When looking at a system and trying to determine what LiPo Cell Count (S) to run, the entire system must be taken into consideration.
A ESC may be rated 3-8S, however, the motor may only be rated 3-6S. There for the system will have a limitation of a 6S battery.
Lets take a look at the EZRun Max6 Combos.
The Combo is available with two different motor combinations.
1. EZRun 4985SL 1650KV
2. EZRun 5687SL 1100KV
If we look at the table above the 4985SL motor is on the left and the 5687SL is on the right.
Notice the LiPo(S). The 4985SL 1650KV motor has a rating of 3-6S and the 5687SL 1100KV has a rating of 3-8S.
If the 4985SL combo is used although the Max6 is rated 3-8S we would be limited to running 6S as the max LiPo voltage.
If the 5687SL combo is used the system can run at a full 8S LiPo Voltage that the Max6 is rated for.
Keep in mind when deciding what motor you want to run in a system, the key word is system. Meaning all the components used in the system must be taken into consideration when deciding what battery to run with the SYSTEM.
