Q. recently bought an XR8 Plus ESC for my Traxxas Maxx. It worked perfectly for a month or so using only 3S batteries. I recently bought some 4S batteries, and now it shuts down frequently, and I’m guessing it’s a heat problem. The 3S batteries do not chase this problem. I am using XT60 connectors with it. Since this ESC is supposed to support 6S, I assume it’s nowhere near its limit.
Any idea of steps I could take to troubleshoot this? And, would larger connectors likely help with the problem? Like, XT90s or EC5s?

A.
Most likely, gearing changes are needed when you change voltage.
Because an ESC can handle a stated voltage, does not mean, "The rest" of the setup can. The vehicle has to be "setup" for higher voltage by changing motor, gearing, or whatever the case may be. It is no common to take a setup that Works on 3s well, and simply put in "Higher voltage" and it works well also. Usually, just installing higher voltage, with "no other changes" means it will overheat.
That, or the 4s battery packs are not up to the task they are being asked to do.
